RESUMO

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the main causes of liver disease, specifically chronic liver disease. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with the risk of NAFLD given that patients usually have insulin resistance as one of the observed complications with NAFLD. Hypoglycemic agents, including sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2), have shown to improve NAFLD. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of SGLT-2 inhibitors on NAFLD patients' outcomes, whether they have T2DM or not. We conducted a comprehensive search using the PubMed and Ovid databases to identify published studies that addressed the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors in NAFLD patients. The outcomes assessed include changes in liver enzymes, lipid profiles, weight changes, the fibrosis-4-index (FIB4), and magnetic resonance imaging proton density-based fat fraction (MRI-PDFF). Only clinical trials that met the quality measures were included in this review. Out of 382 potential studies, we included 16 clinical trials that discussed the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors in NAFLD patients. A total of 753 patients were enrolled in these trials. The majority of the trials reported positive effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on liver enzymes; alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and gamma-glutamyl transferase. All 10 trials that reported changes in body mass index (BMI) from baseline showed a statistically significant reduction with SGLT-2 inhibitor use, while 11 studies reported a significant increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, 3 studies reported a reduction in triglycerides (TG) levels, and 2 studies showed a decrease in low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. The available evidence shows that the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors in NAFLD is associated with positive outcomes on liver enzymes, lipid profiles, and BMI. Further studies with larger sample size and longer follow-up time are warranted.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of the addition of silver nitrate cautery versus antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines and a search of electronic information was conducted to identify all Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) and non-randomised studies comparing the outcomes of the addition of silver nitrate cautery versus antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis. Treatment success and persistence of bleeding were primary outcome measures. Secondary outcome measures included treatment side effects. Fixed effects modelling was used for the analysis. RESULTS: Four studies enrolling 240 patients were identified. There was no significant difference between silver nitrate cautery group and antiseptic cream alone group in terms of complete resolution (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.07, P = 0.81), the partial resolution (OR = 1.02, P = 0.96) and persistence of bleeding (OR = 0.91, P = 0.71). For secondary outcomes, antiseptic nasal cream was associated with few side effects such as rash in one case and several complaints of bad smell or taste. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of silver nitrate cautery is not superior to the use of antiseptic cream alone in paediatric patients with recurrent epistaxis as it does not improve treatment success or persistence of bleeding.

The lack of treatment options for COVID-19 has raised many concerns among populations worldwide, which has led to many attempts to find alternative options to prevent the transmission of the disease or to alleviate the progression of the infection, including focusing more on preventive measures (to prevent transmission to other individuals) and the use of natural products and herbal extracts to increase immunity and decrease the probability of getting infected. This study explored the knowledge of the population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) about COVID-19 preventive measures and their belief about the consumption of herbal products for the prevention of COVID-19 infection. A total of 5,258 individuals participated in this study. Participants' knowledge about the appropriate COVID-19 preventive measures in terms of handwashing procedures, self-quarantine and social distancing was moderate, with a mean score of 5.5 (SD: 1.7) out of 10 (representing around 55.0% of the total score). About 22.1% (n = 1,161) of the participants reported that they have used herbal products or nutritional supplements during the pandemic period, to protect themselves from the disease. Social media and the Internet (39.4%, n = 372) were the main motivators for the participants to try herbal products. Vitamin C was the most commonly used food supplement to increase immunity and reduces the chance of contracting COVID-19. Our study demonstrated that the general population in Saudi Arabia has a moderate level of knowledge about COVID-19 transmission and preventive measures. A considerable proportion of the population reported the use of herbal products or food supplements in order to protect themselves from the disease. Policymakers are suggested to provide further educational campaigns that increase population knowledge about the disease transmission routes and preventive measures. In addition, the use of herbal products should be evidence-based to ensure patient safety.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of food hygiene among primary, intermediate and high school students and explore association, if any, with socio-demographic differences. METHODS: The observational cross-sectional study was conducted at boy's schools in Majmaah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from February to May 2014. Data was collected using stratified random sampling technique from students aged 8-25 year. Two schools from each level (primary, intermediate and high school) were randomly selected and data was collected from the selected schools using simple random sampling method. A self-administered modified Sharif and Al-Malki questionnaire for knowledge, attitude and practice of food hygiene was used with Arabic translation. RESULTS: The mean age of 377 male students in the study was 14.53±2.647 years. Knowledge levels was less in primary school students compared to high school students (p=0.026). Attitude level was high in primary school students compared to intermediate school students (p< 0.001). No significant difference was observed between groups with regard to practice levels (p=0.152). CONCLUSIONS: The students exhibited good practice levels, despite fair knowledge and attitude levels.
